Tel Aviv-based Verint has announced the acquisition of Kfar Saba-based Focal Info, a developer of innovative online Data Crawling & Extraction tools and advanced software engines for data extraction from open web sources. The deal is estimated to be approximately $10 million. Verint maintains a major operation in Atlanta, and was the 2011 winner of AICC’s Eagle Star “Israeli Company of the Year” award.

Following last month’s announcement of the Chapter 11 bankruptcy of Eastman Kodak, the company announced that its Petah Tikvah R&D center will meet obligations to its 400 employees and vendors. The Israel operation is Kodak’s largest R&D center outside the US.

Israel Aerospace Industries and Boeing have expanded their collaboration on the Arrow anti-ballistic missile program, last month marking the 10th year of their joint work on this program to develop new opportunities in the missile defense arena. Boeing is one of South Carolina’s major employers with their Dreamliner assembly plant in Charleston.

Yokneam-based Given Imaging reported 2011 revenue rose 12.8% to $178 million over the previous year with sales increases of 40% in Asia-Pacific, 12.2% in the Middle East & Africa, and 8% in the Americas. The company, whose North America headquarters is in Atlanta, has two pivotal clinical trials in the US and Japan for its PillCam Colon 2 diagnostic endoscopic camera for the bowel and 40 other clinical trials worldwide.

The acquisition of Tel Aviv-based Tescom Software Testing Systems has been completed by One1Software Technologies, also in Tel Aviv. Founded in 1990, Tescom has 600 employees worldwide including their center in Atlanta.

IBM has acquired Kibbutz Shefayim-based WorkLight for $60 million. WorkLight was one of three Israeli companies featured at AICC’s “Future of Payments” event in Atlanta in December 2010.

Shai Agassi, CEO of Rosh Ha’ayin-based Better Place, has told Bloomberg that the electric vehicle recharging network developer is planning an IPO in the next two years. To date, the company has raised $750 million, and this month unveiled its national battery recharging and replacement infrastructure in Israel.

Rep. Howard Berman (D-California) has introduced a bill allowing Israeli nationals to apply for an E-2 investor visa to the US. Israelis are currently ineligible for this type of nonimmigrant visa that permits foreign investors to temporarily live and work in close proximity to their investments in the US. An E-2 visa can be renewed for 2-year periods so long as the business exists. According to Globes, the bill enjoys bi-partisan support in the Congress.

Exits involving Israeli and Israel-related high tech companies in 2011 totaled $5.23 billion, a 134% increase from $2.18 billion in 2010 and the 2nd highest amount in a decade after the $10 worth of deals in 2006, according to the IVC Research Center. 85 Israeli companies were acquired or merged in 2011, 27% more than the 67 companies acquired or merged in 2010 and 4% more than the previous five-year average of 81.

In addition to AICC and the Federation, organizational co-sponsors included Memphis BioWorks, Greater Memphis Chamber, American Israel Educational Institute, and Ag BioWorks. Thanks to Scott Notowich (Israel Opportunity Fund), chair of this seminar series, and Lee Harkavy, who hosted the program at his Wyatt Tarrant & Combs office. The final two seminars will focus on Israeli innovations in Security and Medical Devices

Israel was well represented at the 4th Georgia Logistics Summit last week in Atlanta. Participating Israeli companies included Tefen-based StePac, developer of a comprehensive program for monitoring produce freshness and quality as it travels through all links in the cold supply chain; Migdal Ha’Emek-based Haama Ltd, manufacturer of an environmentally friendly insulation material; and Kibbutz Revivim-based Raviv ACS Ltd, a developer and assembly supplier for the automotive industry. The event, organized by the Georgia Department of Economic Development, attracted 1,600 people with over 50 exhibitors, and was staged in conjunction with the MODEX conference, one of the largest for this industry.

The Israeli delegation’s participation was organized as a joint effort of the Israel Economic Mission to the South, The Israel Consulate to the Southeast, and the American-Israel Chamber of Commerce, and included a sponsored “Israel booth” that was a focal point of meetings. The project was inspired by a visit to Atlanta over two years ago by Israel’s Minister of Industry, Trade & Labor who recognized the importance of the Logistics industry to Georgia and the role Israeli companies and their technologies could play in its development.

“No doubt this event provided me a huge capability to start to push our Xsense product in US,” said Udi Aviran, StePac’s Director of Business Development.

Sixty participants from 32 South Carolina companies learned about selling to Israel’s Ministry of Defense at the January 31st seminar at SCRA in Charleston. Organized by the American-Israel Chamber of Commerce, SE Region, the event featured a briefing by the Ministry’s procurement team based at their New York mission and included presentations by six of the companies and one-on-one meetings to discuss how to get their products and services to the attention of the buyers.

Israel receives almost $3 billion annually in US foreign aid, and $2.2 billion of this amount is spent on purchases from American companies. This presents an outstanding opportunity for Southeast companies, and yet just $37 million was procured in 2010 from companies in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

“While not an insignificant number, we can do much more to educate our companies as well as the Israeli procurement officials to stimulate much higher purchases this year and beyond,” said AICC President Tom Glaser.

A highlight of the seminar was the case study of Tognum America which was recently awarded a multi-million dollar contract to assemble the engines for Israel’s Merkava tank at their Aiken County, South Carolina facility. A third assembly line is being added to handle this important project. Another South Carolina company, AMBAC, is a supplier of parts for the tank’s engine.
