Andre Schnabl,
Chairman of the Board

This month, we begin a new chapter in the Southeast-Israel business relationship with Delta Air Lines’ inaugural flight from Atlanta to Tel Aviv.  Fulfilling the Chamber’s long time goal of daily, non-stop flights, this new service will facilitate shorter travel times and enable Atlanta to become a gateway for Israeli companies to connections throughout the US and for American fliers, including those from Latin America, on their way to Israel.

AICC has taken an active role in assisting Delta make the connections with our network in both our region and Israel.  We look forward to experiencing the first flight and many more to come!

Spotlight: AICC Software Committee

Israel’s Software industry has produced some of the country’s best known and successful companies including CheckPoint, Amdocs, NICE Systems, Mercury Interactive, and Aladdin.  And since the time Israeli companies began establishing US headquarters in the mid ‘90s, a majority of the ones choosing Atlanta and the Southeast have come from the Software sector such as Jacada, Arel, Radware, Tescom, Sapiens, and FundTech.

AICC’s Software Committee has played a pivotal role in nurturing this sector by establishing
Israel as a key building block to the region’s technology economy. Over the years, the volunteers in this group have organized the acclaimed US-Israel e-Business Exchanges in 1999 and 2000, and the US-Israel Software Business Exchange in 2004 that have brought large numbers of promising Israeli companies to Atlanta for meetings with prominent companies including IBM, Microsoft, H-P, UPS, BellSouth, Cisco, ISS, Intel, and more.  Last year, the committee helped forge the Chamber’s special relationship with IBM’s Global Technology Unit (GTU).

According the Lorin Coles (Alliancesphere), chairman of the Software Committee, the group is now concentrating on six areas of the industry in which Israel excels and the Southeast has distinguished itself: Security, Data Management, Infrastructure, Wireless/Communications, CRM, and Enterprise. The Chamber’s Israel director is now actively contacting Israeli companies in these areas to encourage them to request AICC’s assistance.   The committee has a half-dozen volunteer teams at any time working to evaluate these companies, recommend market strategies, and make introductions to potential strategic partners, investors, and customers in the region.

The Software Committee is now planning a CRM-focused event for April on “Enhancing Customer Experience through Israeli Technologies.” Look for details in the next newsletter.

Economic News From Israel

2005: An Exceptional Year for Employment

Total employment in Israel
(absolute quarterly changes, seasonally adjusted)

Source: Central Bureau of Statistics

With less than three weeks to go (at the time of writing) until the general election on 28 March, there does not seem to be much interest in current economic developments. One of the reasons for this is that the economy seems to be chugging along very nicely, thank you – so why worry?

One of the major indicators of economic macro-prosperity is the increase in employment. In fact, employment is more important for labor market analysis than unemployment, even though the latter is what most analysts monitor.

2005 was a plum year for employment growth. Overall, employment growth reached 3.9%, with an additional 30 thousand added, on average, each quarter. The final quarter of 2005 even saw a jump in construction employment, a possible sign of initial recovery in this sector.

Growing employment indicates increasing demand for labor, and increasing demand for labor indicates optimism on the part of employers regarding prospects for continuing growth – otherwise why should they take on more workers.

On the other hand, we must not forget unemployment, which continued to decline during 2005, but at a much slower pace than in 2004: the rate of unemployment remained at a high 8.8% in the final quarter of last year.

Should this dampen our enthusiasm regarding the employment increase? Absolutely not: it is not unusual in a period of initial recovery, for unemployment to decrease less fast than employment is increasing.

The reason for this is connected with the third major variable in labor market analysis – labor force participation. Basically what happens in a recovery is that an increasing number of people, who previously have not been working, enter the labor force to find work, on the assumption that there is more work to be had if the economy is recovering. Most of these new labor force participants will find work (thus the increase in employment), but others may not be successful and will end up by restraining the decline in 2005.

This explains exactly what happened in 2005 – a large increase in labor force participation, a limited decline in unemployment.

This is textbook stuff for a labor market coming out of recession: we need not be too worried about the very mild decline in unemployment last year.

Now that we know this, we can go back to trying to decide who to vote for on 28 March. That’s a more difficult question.
