Chairman of the Board

Next month, our
Software Committee will showcase a group of Israeli companies offering insights into “The Future of Payments”.  The December 9th networking / educational event is built around the industry cluster concept, a hallmark of AICC’s Strategic Plan.  The Atlanta area is a major center for FinTech – financial technology — particularly in the area of payments, with major companies headquartered here including First Data, Global Payments, Equifax, Elavon, Fiserv, Radiant Systems, and NCR, as well as banks and financial institutions and enterprises that are their customers.

Israel is also a hub for financial technology.  They are innovating in key issues for the industry including alternative and mobile payments and payments security.  Already, two Israeli companies in this sector have operations in Atlanta — SeerGate and Fundtech – and there is the potential for many more if we can drive them to business opportunities here.  Partnering with TAG FinTech, Israel FinTech, the Metro Atlanta Chamber’s Technology Leadership Council, and other organizations, we see the potential to elevate this sector for fruitful collaboration that could lead to partnerships, matchmaker events, missions, and investments.

Congratulations to the committee’s chairman Lorin Coles and to others on his team including Phil Rubin, Arie Goldshlager, and Andrew Morris for their leadership and foresight on this sector that shows so much potential.  And don’t miss this exciting event.  For information, click here.

Developments & Transactions

Vumii Acquired by Opgal
Atlanta-based Vumii has been acquired by Karmiel, Israel-based Opgal, enabling them to add Vumii’s unique laser and LED long-range day-night vision technology hardware–Discoverii and Claritii–and situation management software –Sensorii–to its portfolio of electro-optic products.  Through the transaction, officials of both companies emphasize Opgal will obtain a strong global brand, an experienced US management team, and a leverageable business entity for its sales and support activities.  Vumii will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of Opgal under the same Vumii management team.

“I am thrilled with this outcome and excited to join an organization with a history of more than 25 years developing and producing high quality, specialized imaging products.  Given the world-wide demand for ever-increasing advanced security products, adding Vumii to Opgal provides tremendous growth resources and experience.  Our customers and business partners will greatly benefit from this acquisition,” said Vumii CEO and co-founder Randall Foster who also chairs AICC’s Security Committee and is a member of the Chamber’s Executive Committee.

Opgal is a leading manufacturer of innovative thermal imaging safety and security systems and infrared cameras, offering a wide selection of cooled and uncooled OEM Thermal imaging cameras, engines, and cores for defense, military, paramilitary, security and aviation applications.  The company is equally owned by Israel-based Rafael and Elbit Systems.

Chamber Leaders Meet with Jerusalem’s Mayor

Mayor Nir Barkat (center) meets with AICC leaders including (from right) Lorin Coles, Randall Foster, Tom Glaser, Ben Taube, and Seth Cohen (left) who arranged the meeting.

Members of the AICC Executive Committee met last month with Jerusalem’s Mayor Nir Barkat when he was in Atlanta to speak to the JNF national conference.  A very successful high tech entrepreneur and investor prior to entering politics, Barkat shared his plans to promote Jerusalem as a major center for business including tourism, technology and life science.  He expressed a strong desire to establish a collaborative relationship between the Chamber and the Jerusalem Development Authority.  Subsequently, AICC Vice President Guy Tessler met in Israel with the JDA staff and Chen Levin, executive director of BioJerusalem, the city’s agency to develop its assets in medical devices, healthcare, and biotechnology.

“We were happy to engage with Mayor Barkat, and look forward to exploring how we can help connect Jerusalem to the Southeast in mutually beneficial economic development initiatives,” said Tom Glaser, President of the American-Israel Chamber of Commerce, SE Region.

UGA College of Public Health Connects with Israel
Relationships between Israeli organizations and the University of Georgia College of Public Health are helping the college’s Center for Global Health carry out its mission of identifying best practices of health care, to support their dissemination, adaptation, and then adoption throughout the world in order to improve health care for all.  “Israel is a fascinating developed country that has a successful health care system that can be a model to seek best practices of health care,” noted Center Director Richard Schuster, MD, MPH.

Most recently, the collaboration provided the opportunity for a second-year Master of Public Health student to complete his internship requirements at the Western Galilee Hospital.  Previously, renowned Israeli researchers and physicians have taught classes and given lectures to students studying emergency preparedness.  Presently, mutual guest lectures focusing on the differences between the US and Israeli health care systems are taking place in the College’s classrooms via videoconferencing.

Past collaborations between UGA and Israel have been primarily with the College of Public Health’s Institute of Health Management and Mass Destruction Defense and the University of Haifa where faculty and students are learning about Israel’s approach to dealing with mass casualties and other results of acts of terrorism.  The goal is to bring these lessons back to hospitals in metro Atlanta and Georgia.  “We in America have a lot to learn from the Israeli emergency medical system, especially in mass casualty medical response,” noted Cham Dallas, professor and director of the Institute.

Next year, the Center for Global Health and the University of Haifa will hold a joint conference focusing on health disparities.  Faculty members from Israel are expected to attend and present lectures alongside College of Public Health and UGA faculty.  “Although Israel is known for its sophistication in emergency preparedness, overall its health system provides excellent care to its population.  We as nations share similar health problems, and working together to seek common solutions is valuable,” Schuster added.  The Center is hopeful that student and faculty exchanges, joint teaching and research between the two universities will follow.

Dr. Harold S. Solomon, who graduated from the University in 1961 and his wife, Milly Pincus Solomon, who also attended UGA, gave a gift to fund these initial collaborations.  AICC is proud to have the University’s College of Public Health Center for Global Health as an active member.  For details, visit www.publichealth.uga.edu.

AICC’s Glaser Leads National Panel

Participants from around the nation gathered in Washington, DC on October 19 for the 25th anniversary of the US-Israel Free Trade Agreement and to attend a conference on the “The United States and Israel: Building Business Through Innovation”.  Organized by the US Chamber of Commerce, the day-long program included a panel on “Partnerships” that was moderated by Tom Glaser, President of the American-Israel Chamber of Commerce, Southeast Region.  Other panelists included BIRD Foundation Executive Director Eitan Yudilevich, Akron Mayor Donald Plusquellic, and Allied O&P Managing Partner Howard Brand whose Pennsylvania-based company is engaged in a joint venture with Yokneam-based Argo Medical Technologies to commercialize an innovative ReWalkTM walk restoration device that enables paralyzed people to stand, walk and even climb stairs.

Israeli Cuisine in Atlanta

The ribbon was cut on October 18th to mark the official grand opening of Café Sababa, the new Mediterranean grill in Dunwoody, Georgia that is a proud member of the American-Israel Chamber of Commerce.  AICC Director of Special Projects, Evan Remer (far right), participated.

“The word ‘sababa’ is Hebrew slang for ‘awesome,’ ‘cool,’ or ‘fun,’ but it literally means ‘ardent love,’ or ‘fervent longing,’” said Chef Doni Tamli who owns the cafe with his wife, Ann.  Tamli has over 20 years of restaurant and catering experience, most recently as owner of Café Ofi at the Marcus JCC of Atlanta.  A native of the seaside of Acco, Israel, Tamli uses his in-depth knowledge of the spices and cooking styles of the Mediterranean and Middle East and offers his unique versions of traditional favorites for an extraordinary culinary experience.  The restaurant features kabobs, falafel, shawarma, gyros, and hummus, as well as signature soups, salads, desserts and daily specials, such as Moroccan-style brisket.
